Extended & Continuous wear contact lenses

Extended wear contact lenses are designed to be worn continuously, including overnight. Depending on the contact lenses, they can be worn for six to thirty days.

What are extended wear contact lenses?

Extended wear contact lenses (or continuous wear contact lenses) are usually either 2 weekly or monthly contact lenses that you can wear between a week to a month without needing to take them out. This means you can wear them while you sleep.

Extended wear lenses are made possible due to advanced silicone hydrogel technology. This special material helps keep your eyes hydrated for longer. It allows up to three times more oxygen to the eye than traditional soft lenses letting your eyes remain clear, crisp, and moist.

Please be aware that not all eyes are suitable for extended wear contacts, so always consult your optician before purchasing a new type of lens. Although some daily disposable contact lenses are made from similar materials, they are not suitable for extended wear.

Benefits of extended wear contact lenses

- Convenience – These lenses can be worn day and night, removing the hassle of cleaning, storing, removing, inserting, and disinfecting your lenses every day.

- Less waste – Fewer blister packs and smaller packaging means there is less waste and clutter. This is also better for the environment.

- Cost-effective – If you wear your contact lenses regularly, these are a cheaper alternative to daily contact lenses. Also, you will not have to spend money on contact lens solutions.

Should you wear extended wear contact lenses?

Extended wear contact lenses provide comfortable wear and clear vision throughout the day and into the night, making them perfect for people who work long hours or have a busy lifestyle. This also benefits people with high prescriptions because you will not have to reach for your glasses if you wake up at night.

Continuous wear lenses are also the lowest maintenance contact lens type because there is no cleaning process, and you do not need to remove them for up to 29 days. They are also a cheaper lens option because you do not have to spend money on contact lens solutions.

However, it is important to note that extended wear contact lenses are not suitable for everyone and cannot be worn as such until an optician has confirmed it is safe to do so. Wearing contact lenses overnight without confirmation from an optician can cause serious harm to your eyes, so please consult with your optician before you do so.

FAQ

Are extended wear contact lenses safe?

Provided that your optician has confirmed it is safe for you to wear these lenses overnight, it is completely safe to wear extended wear contact lenses. The lenses are made from silicone hydrogel, which reduces the risk of eye infections and provides a comfortable wearing experience thanks to the material’s high breathability.

Can you shower with extended wear contacts?

You should always avoid water when wearing contact lenses; extended wear contacts are no different. As with all contact lenses, there is a risk of serious eye infection due to the bacteria found in water. Therefore, you cannot shower with extended wear contact lenses.

How long can you wear extended wear contact lenses?

It depends on the contact lenses. Typically, they can be worn for up to 30 days continuously. However, the wear time will be decided and confirmed by your optician. If you are ever unsure, please speak to your optician to discuss the wear time most suitable for you.
