Sara Cox talks life and vision over 40
Sara Cox and ACUVUE’s new presbyopia campaign addresses the myth that you have to say ‘goodbye’ to your contact lenses, and swap them out for a pair of varifocals which hang around your neck.
Watch ACUVUE’s video below, where radio and TV presenter Sara Cox talks about how aging vision affects her day-to-day, and why you won’t see her putting on her specs to read a menu.
What is presbyopia?
We’ll give you a hint. It’s not a perfume, a capital city, or an exotic flower...
Presbyopia is the term used when the lens of your eye naturally loses some of its flexibility. This makes it harder to focus up close, and simple things like reading a menu are no longer as easy as they once were. Sara realised that she was having just a little bit of difficulty when reading the print on packages.
It develops very gradually – you won’t wake up one morning and be incapable of reading without glasses. Almost everyone will develop presbyopia to some extent by their mid-forties, whether they already wear glasses or not. So there’s no need to worry about it, or feel self-conscious.
Importantly, as your vision changes, your lifestyle and day-to-day doesn’t have to change with it.
What can you do to treat presbyopia?
The great news is that there are several ways to correct blurred near-vision caused by presbyopia, without making any changes to your lifestyle. It cannot be prevented, but your optician will be happy to discuss all of the available options. You could opt for reading or varifocal glasses or even have surgery.
If you have an active lifestyle and don’t want to carry a pair of glasses around just to check your phone (or if you feel the look just isn’t ‘you’), there’s another option. Multifocal contact lenses mean you’re never too old for contact lenses, and there’s no need to carry around and swap between pairs of glasses.
