Daily contact lenses

Daily contact lenses don’t require an ongoing care routine and can be easily accommodated into a wide range of active lifestyles, which is why so many wearers prefer the convenience of them over other types of lenses.

From talking with our customers, we've found some of the most popular reasons for choosing daily lenses are:

  • Convenience - They’re inserted at the start of the day and thrown away at the end – there’s no need to clean and store your lenses.
  • Hygiene - Replacing your lenses daily prevents the build-up of waste substances like proteins, lipids, calcium and allergen, which could cause discomfort. This helps reduce the risk of an eye infection.
  • Cost - If you don't wear your lenses every day, disposables may be a cheaper alternative to monthly lenses. Monthly lenses should be thrown away within 30 days of opening, no matter how many times they have been worn.

How Much Are Daily Contact Lenses?

Daily disposable contact lenses vary in price and can work out as more expensive compared to other types of contact lenses. However, while they may cost more in the long run, this is offset by their convenience, eye health benefits and the fact that there’s no need to follow an ongoing care routine.

Daily disposable contact lenses vary in price depending on the price and the type of lens.

You should replace daily disposable contact lenses each and every day. This means removing and disposing of them each night and then inserting a fresh, sterile pair the next morning.

Should You Buy Cheap Daily Contact Lenses?

In most cases, daily contact lenses are cheaper to buy online than from an optician. However, this doesn’t mean they are of a lower quality. Online retailers, like Lenstore, sell contact lenses manufactured by all of the major manufacturers and brands - it’s just that because we don’t have the overhead costs associated with an optician on the high street, we can pass the savings onto you, the customer!

Daily Disposables vs Other Contacts

Now that you know the pros and cons of wearing daily disposable contact lenses, it’s worth considering how they stack up against the other options available to you.

We think there are four areas worth comparing: the maintenance and upkeep of each lens type, the cost, how often you’ll wear them and overall convenience.

Daily vs Reusable (Two Weekly and Monthly Lenses)

  • Maintenance - Daily lenses require no ongoing care routine, you simply open a new pack each morning and you’re good to go, which can be healthier for your eyes. On the other hand, with two weekly and monthly lenses, you’ll need to rinse, clean and store them overnight at the end of each day, which means you’ll also have to invest in contact lens solutions and cases and ensure you don’t run out.
  • Cost - Daily contact lenses can work out slightly more expensive in the long run as you need to wear a new pair every day. Whereas with two weekly lenses, you might go through two - possibly three - sets in a month so long as they are well cared for. Even with the cost of solution and cleaning products, two weeklies often work out cheaper than daily disposables. While you need to factor in the cost of your care routine, monthlies generally work out cheaper than both daily disposable and two weekly wear contact lenses in the long run. However, it is also worth noting that the cost of daily lenses is dependent on how frequently you wear them.
  • Frequency of wear - Daily contact lenses promote good eye health, even if worn every day, simply because every set is fresh and sterile. This makes them convenient if worn every once in a while too - just open a pack, insert and voila. However, if you do wear lenses every single day, then it can work out cheaper to opt for two weekly or monthly lenses over daily disposables.
  • Convenience - Daily disposable contacts offer excellent convenience, although you’ll need to carry enough packs on you if you’re going away. While two weekly and monthly lenses aren’t massively inconvenient, you’ll need to make sure you don’t run out of solution or storage cases. However, when travelling you don’t need to worry about carrying multiple packs of lenses around with you.

Daily vs Extended Wear Lenses

  • Maintenance - Unlike daily disposable lenses it’s possible to wear extended wear lenses overnight for up to six nights, depending on your optician’s recommendations. While extended wear lenses do not require the same level of ongoing maintenance as that of reusable lenses, you do need to be careful not to bring them in contact with water (while showering etc) to avoid any impurities that can contaminate your contacts and cause infection.
  • Cost - Extended wear lenses tend to work out a little cheaper overall than daily disposable lenses as you can wear them for up to several weeks at a time depending on your prescription and the lenses you opt for - whether two-weeklies or monthlies.
  • Frequency of wear - Unless you’re wearing contact lenses most days, then it’s better to stick with the flexibility offered by daily disposable contact lenses.
  • Convenience - Thanks to the fact you can wear extended wear lenses overnight, they are a convenient option for those who frequently wear contact lenses. However, wearing lenses overnight may lead to potential infections, which isn’t a concern with daily disposables.

How to Wear and Care For Daily Contact Lenses

Besides washing and drying your hands before touching the lenses, daily contact lenses require no ongoing care which makes them a low-maintenance and convenient choice for many wearers.

If you need advice on how to wear your daily contact lenses, the information below should help clear up the questions you may have.

Step by Step: How to Insert and Remove Daily Contact Lenses

If you’re not sure how to insert and take out your daily contact lenses, watch the video or follow these steps below.

  1. 1. Wash and dry your hands, then open the contact lens blister pack

  2. 2. Look into a mirror, tilt your head down and pull down your lower eyelid
  3. 3. Use your index finger to move the lens to the white of your eye, pinch it and remove

Don't Confuse "Daily Wear" With "Daily Disposable"

You definitely don’t want to confuse ‘daily wear’ with ‘daily disposable’ contact lenses! The difference is that daily disposable contact lenses are single-use lenses that don’t need cleaning, you simply dispose of them and insert a new pair every day.

Whereas ‘daily wear’ lenses is a term used for reusable lenses that need to be removed, cleaned, rinsed, sterilised and stored overnight before being worn again the next day (think of them as the opposite of extended wear lenses). However, you’ll still need to replace these contact lenses in accordance with your optician’s replacement schedule recommendation.

Can You Wear Daily Lenses More Than Once?

We do not recommend that you wear daily contact lenses more than once. They are designed to be worn once and then disposed of each night, with a new pair replacing them the next morning.

How Long Can You Wear Daily Contact Lenses For?

On average, it is recommended that you wear your daily lenses for no longer than 10-12 hours. However, this may not be suitable for everyone. Wearing lenses for longer than recommended can cause your eyes to become uncomfortable, red, and prone to infection.
During your contact lens tests your optician will provide you with a wear time that they believe will be suitable for you. You should always follow the wearing schedule that has been advised by your eye care professional.

Can You Sleep While Wearing Daily Contacts?

You cannot sleep while wearing daily contact lenses. These lenses need to be removed and disposed of at the end of each day.

Can You Shower With Daily Contacts?

No, to maintain healthy eyes, we advise that it’s best to avoid contact between water and your contact lenses - this means taking them out before you shower. However, if you have no choice then it’s essential that you make sure no water gets into your eyes and that you bin the contacts as soon as you are done.

Can You Swim in Daily Contact Lenses?

No, you should not swim in daily contact lenses; you should not swim while wearing contact lenses of any kind. When wearing contact lenses, you should avoid water because water can carry all sorts of pathogens and parasites – the most dangerous being acanthamoeba, which attaches to your contact and works its way into the cornea.
Prescription swimming goggles are available for those who require vision correction while swimming.

Can You Store Daily Contact Lenses?

No, once you have taken daily contact lenses out of your eye you must dispose of them. Daily lenses should not be stored overnight in solution or reused.

How to Clean Daily Contacts?

As there’s no need to store daily contact lenses you don’t need to worry about cleaning them either. However, if you notice debris on a lens during insertion, you can use the sterile solution in the blister to rinse it before putting in your eye.

Do daily contact lenses count as liquids?

No, daily contact lenses do not count as liquids, and you can bring disposable blister packs in your hand luggage when you travel by plane.

Are daily contact lenses better for dry eyes?

Daily contact lenses are considered the best contact lens type for wearers with dry eyes because daily lenses are meant to be thrown away at the end of each day. By doing this, the lens has no chance for protein and lipid deposits to build up on the lenses.

However, some lenses are better suited for people than others. It is important to talk to your optician about which type of lenses would be best for you. Also, if you have dry eyes, you should talk to your optician about how to manage your condition and how to wear contact lenses comfortably.

Are daily contact lenses better than monthly?

Both daily lenses and monthly lenses have their benefits and offer something different, so it depends on what you require from your contact lenses.

Daily contact lenses are more convenient and hygienic because you simply dispose of them at the end of every day; compared to monthly lenses, which need to be removed, cleaned, and stored at the end of every day.

Monthly contact lenses are more cost-effective because the same lenses are used for up to 30 days. Also, they are more environmentally friendly because monthly lenses produce less waste.

However, not all prescriptions are available in daily contact lenses. Therefore, you should speak to your optician, who will be able to identify what contact lenses are the most suitable for you.

Are daily contact lenses more expensive than monthly?

When choosing a lens, it’s wise to consider how often you’ll wear them. Despite the need to buy contact lens solutions, monthlies are considered the cheaper option for the full-time wearer. If you prefer to alternate between specs and lenses, daily disposables may be a more cost-effective option, and we have a range of cheap contact lenses for you to choose from.

Are daily contact lenses soft or hard?

Daily contact lenses are soft contact lenses and are usually made from either hydrogel or silicone hydrogel.

Can daily contact lenses be reused?

No, daily contact lenses should not be reused and must be disposed of at the end of the day.

Are daily lenses healthier?

Daily lenses are considered to be healthier for your eyes because they are disposed of and replaced every day. Replacing your lenses daily prevents the build-up of waste substances like proteins, lipids, calcium, and allergen, which could cause discomfort. This helps reduce the risk of an eye infection.

Can you take out daily contacts and put them back on the same day?

No, daily contacts are made for single use, therefore, you cannot reuse them, and they need to be discarded once you have taken them out.

Is it OK to wear daily contacts every day?

Yes, you can wear daily contacts every day. However, we & eye care professional recommend occasionally wearing your glasses and taking a break from your contact lenses once or twice a week to keep your eyes healthy.
