8 ways to boost wellness at home

Self-care is more than spending a day at the spa. It’s about the little things you can do to feel your best inside and out — something that’s more important than ever right now.

Read on to discover up 8 ways to unwind at home, no matter how much (or little time) you have.

Create a daily routine

Research has shown that routines can play an important role in mental health, especially in times of uncertainty. A great place to start is to set sleep and wake times, and meals and exercise times. Part of your self-care strategy should include simple ways to incorporate the practice into your schedule. That could mean morning meditation, a quiet cup of coffee or a bubble bath after a long day.

Create a sanctuary at home

While it’s probably apparent right now, your surroundings can have a huge effect on your mood. Start with a clean slate in 2022 and fill your space with things that make you feel good. Add some scented candles, create a plant oasis or refresh your wall art. Research shows that an organised space has a positive impact on mental health and can decrease cortisol levels. Even the smallest spaces can be transformed into your own zen den.

Start a side hustle

Hobbies have tons of psychological benefits. Taking time out to just sit and relax isn’t always easy. But hobbies provide time away from responsibilities and a busy schedule, while also bringing a sense of purpose and productivity. Better yet, hobbies can reduce stress levels, help fight depression and improve memory. Whether your hobby is creative, academic or athletic, the important thing is that it’s enjoyable and meaningful.

Listen to music

The soothing power of music is well established. Studies have shown that music can boost positivity, slow the heart rate, lower blood pressure and reduce stress hormones. One of the great benefits of music as a stress reliever is that it can be easily incorporated into your daily routine. Take a portable radio in the shower, pop on your favourite playlist while walking the dog or have a little dance while cooking dinner.

Eat well

Eating a balanced diet is key to keeping our body and our mind healthy. Swap sugary snacks, which cause blood sugar to spike and crash, for healthy alternatives like avocado on wholegrain toast, Greek yoghurt with blueberries or a handful of almonds. Citrus fruits, dark chocolate, avocados and fibre-rich foods are all scientifically proven to help fend off stress.

A healthy diet also helps to maintain healthy eyes. Our range of eye vitamins provides natural nutrients that support healthy vision — ideal if your diet needs a boost of Lutein, Zeaxanthin and Omega 3.

Read a book

Several studies have found that reading can reduce your heart rate, ease tension in your muscles and give your eyes a well-needed break from digital devices. Trade your morning scroll through your Facebook feed with an uplifting book or an inspiring podcast.

Get outside

No matter how busy you are, make it a habit to lace up your trainers and take a daily stroll. Getting outside for just 20 minutes can help lower your heart rate, reduce fatigue, boost mental health and support the immune system. It can also help you get a better night’s sleep, especially if you combine it with physical activity—all-round goodness.

Unplug in the evenings

Research has suggested that social media doesn’t always have its intended effect of bringing us together; instead, it can make us lonely and anxious. Taking a break from social media, even for brief periods, can help reduce feelings of anxiety and isolation. The same goes for work emails. A helpful tip is to turn off all notifications after hours or leave your phone in another room.
